“I’ve been pushed in front of video as a display of diversity. In reality, currently only white editors are paid for their video appearances. None of the people of color have been compensated.” —Sohla El-Waylly By now, anyone who even slightly follows food media news knows that Bon Appetit Magazine’s editor in chief Adam Rapoport…

“They have every outlet you can imagine. They can pull out their gun and shoot a man walking down the street if they’re having a rough day. And who stops them? No-one.” —Lianne Noel I’m publishing this on June 5, 2020. This is the eleventh straight day of sustained protests because Officer Derek Chauvin of…

Pancakes may be humankind’s finest invention. Whoever first said, “Hey I know! Let’s just pour beautiful cake batter onto a buttery hot skillet and see what happens!” deserves the highest honors society can bestow. I’ve been a persistent and enthusiastic pancake lover since before the age of concrete memories, but once I reached (supposedly mature)…

“We did not do a complete search of records from his office. If something had come up, we would have looked at the records. I do not recall and do not believe we reviewed his Senate records.” —William Jeffress, lawyer for the Obama campaign’s vice presidential search team It is almost mid-May of 2020, a…

My regular readers know that about four years ago, circumstances – what I’ll euphemistically call Mr. Wallace’s job – dragged us from our beloved de facto rent-controlled NYC apartment to the unwashed American mainland also known as New Jersey. Here we still sit. Don’t worry, we hate you too. I think of my nine years…

Since there is, oh, a whole global pandemic occupying our every thought and non-movement right now, I’ve noticed that few people outside Bernie Sanders’ most die-hard supporters seem aware that a serious accusation of sexual assault has been made against our all-but-certain Democratic presidential nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden. To be clear, the…

Last week I saw an unstamped flyer in my mail slot. I don’t know about yours, but in my neighborhood that usually signals either lurking Jehovah’s Witnesses or some random realtor letting us know she has a client looking for a house just like ours and would we be interested in selling at this time?…

For anyone in the future post-human species reading this in the year 3128, once the laptops have been excavated from fossils after a literal scorched earth has killed off all current living organisms and ossified or melted all electronics, first of all, thank you! I’m pleased my work is still being seen. Secondly, future post-human…

The Democratic primary drags on, and there are things we know, and things we don’t know. We know Michael Bloomberg is a dangerous authoritarian trying to buy his way into the election. We know that at the last debate Senator Elizabeth Warren cut off his balls, expertly filleted them, and dispensed with silver platters but…

Since the recent uptick in Bernie Sanders’ polling, we’ve seen a spate of articles gossiping talking around the supposed fact that former President Obama hates him and wants to stop him from receiving the Democratic nomination this summer.  These articles are all vague, with lots of conjecture and few direct quotes, but for the sake…

Chocolate Tahini Sheet Cake with Tahini Frosting i Chocolate Tahini Sheet Cake with Tahini Frosting is #ontheblog 👍👍
Today culminates one of the darkest weeks I've seen in a long time. I strongly suspected some sort of chaos would happen January 6th, but was still shaken by the depravity of it. One aspect I can't shake or wrap my head around is how we're all just... expected to go on with life. After watching half of Congress almost get assassinated. That happened, we saw it live, and it's just, go back to work, do the laundry, go on about your routine. No day of mourning, no time off to process the trauma.

I feel very weird sharing recipes. Who's even thinking about cooking rn? There's no real way to rationalize it; it's my job, and like you, I have to keep working. If you want a stress bake, this cake will treat you well. Tahini - not just for hummus! It pairs with chocolate beautifully.

Stay safe, take care of yourself. Keep using your voice to fight for justice. It'll get worse before it gets better. Sending you 💛💛💛

New! A Very Wrong and Offensive Vodka Martini is # New! A Very Wrong and Offensive Vodka Martini is #ontheblog because how else would we send off this trash fire off a year?

Basically, what I did was take the typical vodka martini ratios, but strained into rocks glasses over ice, then I inelegantly eschewed cocktail skewers in favor of plopping olives straight into the drink.

It's wrong. It's offensive. It's delicious and appropriate though. Try it, see what you think!

Sausage and Sage Biscuits! Merry Christmas Eve to Sausage and Sage Biscuits! Merry Christmas Eve to all who celebrate it!
I love these biscuits, flaky and studded with bits of meat and earthy sage, because they remind me of my mom's Christmas Morning Sausage Balls, but, they're maybe more sophisticated? That doesn't stop me from making my mom's, mind you 😉
If you need a brunch idea for tomorrow, there's time to pull these biscuits off! Our any other morning works too.

Mom's Sausage Balls:
Mix 3 cups Bisquick, 1 lb raw breakfast sausage & 12 oz grated cheddar until combined (this takes forever) then roll into balls and bake at 350 F about 15 minutes
