Pumpkin Cornbread

Pumpkin Cornbread

November 16, 2020 by Julie Leave a Comment

It’s been over a week since our pro-Trump mainstream media finally stepped up and said what everyone already knew: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the presidential election. Nowhere near enough Americans cast their vote against fascism, but those of us who did whooped it up for a day. As was predictable, dust is settling,…

“It’s time to stop worrying about what the Republicans will say. It’s true that if we embrace a far left agenda, they’re going to say we’re a bunch of crazy socialists. If we embrace a conservative agenda, you know what they’re going to do? They’re going to say we’re a bunch of crazy socialists. Let’s…

“This is the worst-case scenario, my friends. Don’t take anything for granted. Yes, you are voting. But they are not trying to win an election anymore. Those words should chill you, to your very bones. Because the truth is that more often than not — coups succeed.” —Umair Haque I’m dedicating today’s post, published on…

“Why would I spend $5 on a bag of apples at the store when I can wear warm fall clothes in 88° weather and pay $36 for our family to pick them ourselves.” –Simon Holland  As my regulars know, I grew up in north Texas, where the weather is plenty hot and aside from a…

“You cannot treat the 21st-century Republican Party as a legitimate negotiating partner, or a principled ideological opponent, because it has abandoned all principles, possesses no clear or consistent ideology, and does not respect the legitimacy of democracy. Biden’s pitch to voters seems to be that all of that was caused by one evil man with…

“The Bible says to love your neighbor as you love yourself, but what if Christianity has taught you not to love yourself? Then you hate your neighbor as you hate yourself – impotently, in despair.” –Lauren O’Neal, Empty the Pews Earlier this week, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “When politicians use faith as an…

Hoooo boy, what a goat rodeo of a week this was. I won’t rehash it in real time, your head is spinning too, but for those reading this in the future, just know this is the week in 2020 our fascist president contracted COVID. Obviously it’s a big deal, but I believe it shouldn’t and…

I don’t have an exact, or even vague, timeline of when roast chickens became all the rage for celebrity chefs. When food media began writing Very Serious Articles about whose technique was superior. I also don’t exactly know when Roast Chicken became some sort of home cook litmus test to determine skill, or seriousness, or…

“I take those pinky promises seriously” –Senator Elizabeth Warren Right after Senator Elizabeth Warren suspended her presidential campaign, I started, in a swell of fury and sadness, writing about it. I meant it to be a tribute, in a way. Then I got, oh, just a little sidelined by a whole global pandemic thing. Now…

Last week, on Instagram, I said that Joe Biden is not coming to save you, and I think a lot of people got kind of mad at me. I wanted to take a moment to contextualize what I said, because it was never my intent to anger you, just to warn you.  First things first:…

New! Barbuto's Meatballs and Polenta is #ontheblog New! Barbuto's Meatballs and Polenta is #ontheblog

So, pandemic burnout is a real thing - those feelings of exhaustion and disconnection are not all in your head, and you are hardly alone. One tiny thing I do for self care is weekend cooking projects. I pour some wine or tea, put on comfy shoes and good music, and then spend all afternoon in the kitchen. Usually Saturdays. This is one of my favorite project recipes we made recently.

I've made more than my fair share of meatball recipes, with all the different cooking methods, and here's my hot take: I always sit out The Meatball Fight, and these meatballs are so damn good. Favorites category, easily. Make one of those Olive Garden-esque Italian salads, pop open a bottle of red, and that's a good cozy evening right there! Stay safe, keep going. ❤❤❤

New! Grapefruit and Earl Grey Bread 😊😊 This New! Grapefruit and Earl Grey Bread 😊😊

This recipe intrigued me because it evinced such skepticism. I don't love grapefruit on its own, nor do I enjoy Earl Grey tea, and then on first blush the addition of cocoa powder didn’t make sense to me. But I made it anyway and learned what I already knew: never doubt @eatthelove (Irvin Lin). It's *delicious* and you get it on the first bite. Earthy and just slightly bitter flavor, not too sweet, with a cute swirl in the middle plus that perfect banana-bread-esque stickiness on top!

Palomas with Chaat Masala! Need a drink tonight? O Palomas with Chaat Masala! Need a drink tonight? Of course you do! Want to at least feel like you're enjoying it on a tropical beach? That'd be nice... Here you go!

Palomas are Margaritas' first cousins: grapefruit, tequila, agave syrup, and this very special, lovely version adds the Indian spice mix chaat masala for a unique twist you didn't expect. It's 💯😊💛

My Favorite Turkey Chili! Happy another snow day My Favorite Turkey Chili!

Happy another snow day (or something) my fellow northeasterners! We got 2 feet yesterday, and another few inches today, and I'll just confirm that being stuck inside for blizzards > being stuck inside for pandemics.

I'm craving chili rn, of course I didn't think ahead to get stuff to make it, but if I had, this beautiful turkey chili would be dinner tonight. Dark meat turkey, lots of earthy spices incl cocoa powder give it an almost mole vibe. I always serve any chili with Frito scoops and Shiner Bock, because part of me never really left Texas! 😍😍
