Welcome to another Sunday Morning Coffee, and this one is snowy! We in the good ol’ NJ got a few inches yesterday – they were mostly the really pretty fat snowflakes that everyone except my cat loves (he chases them from the windowsill and feels sad when he pounces at the window and can’t actually catch any). I’m thinking an extra cup of joe is in order for me today, I’m on my second day in a row of pretty much no sleep thanks to next-door neighbor partying. I always thought parties that dictated musical selections like Journey, Elton John, REO Speedwagon, and Al Green would be a bit mellower. Different strokes I guess… Anyways here we are. Enjoy!
I Know Why Taylor Swift is on TIME’s Person of the Year Cover But WHY is She on the Cover? — I can’t possibly be the ONLY person out there who detests Taylor Swift. Right? While I certainly applaud the idea behind TIME Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2017, I too thought it particularly tone-deaf to include Swift. I mean, I’m sorry a gross DJ groped her and I’m glad she dragged his ass to court, but to imply that her career was in any way vulnerable for taking that stand is pretty damn insulting.
I Study Liars. I’ve Never Seen One Like President Trump — A social scientist who has dedicated her career to specifically researching lies and lying and the people who tell lies turns all that knowledge on Trump. Ouch.
The Jobs Report is Overhyped. Here’s Why That’s a Problem — An important and readable breakdown of how the Bureau of Labor Statistics really works.
Voucher Schools Championed by Betsy DeVos Can Teach Whatever They Want. Turns Out They Teach Lies — I grew up in conservative, fundamentalist Christianity, but I consider myself beyond fortunate to have been mostly sent to public school, and a very good one at that. This article is the start of data that desperately needs to be compiled. We the taxpayers are entitled to know what these school vouchers are really funding. Spoiler alert: it’s pretty horrifying.
The Impossible Standards of Christian Purity Culture — I can attest, growing up in purity culture is beyond frustrating – to put it very mildly. I could write a whole book, but this article resonated with me and does a fine job pointing out, at least broadly speaking, how screwed up Modesty really is.
A Psychological Explanation for Kids’ Love of Dinosaurs — We need something lighthearted in this round-up, and this was such a fun read! I love children’s obsession with dinosaurs, and it’s so cool to find out there’s a reason behind it. I think some of that dinosaur obsession never completely died out for me.
In Praise of Ugly Food — PREACH! I love this, and not just because I have no idea how to braid a pie crust or make an apple rose. She makes some excellent points here. To paraphrase one: SUCK IT MARTHA!!!
Brown Butter Old Fashioned — I think the appeal here is completely self-explanatory.
Alton Brown’s Aged Eggnog — This eggnog is life-changing. Matt and I discovered it last year, and we set another batch going yesterday. See you in two weeks delicious, beautiful eggnog!
Bacon Fat Gingersnaps — This recipe has taunted me long enough. I’m making them this week.
And with that, I’m off. Cheers to a restful Sunday!
